Professor John Thwaites, Chair of the Monash University Sustainability Institute, opened a water harvesting system at Syndal South Primary School on Tuesday the 28th of October, utilizing unique technology co-developed by Monash University and a private Australian company, Envirostream Solutions.
This technology allows for the collection of storm water off all hard surfaces, such as roofs, car parks, walkways and quadrangles. The technology captures and successfully treats the rain runoff to ensure that the water stored can be safely used for reuse on the school’s playing fields and toilets.
Syndal South Primary School, actively supported by family and friends is a Sustainable School with an environmental history spanning the last 10 years. The new water harvesting system will save the school over 1 million litres per year and will cut their use of fresh water by over two thirds giving the school access to free water to improve the quality of its playing fields.
The unique technology allows for the first time rain water to be captured off all hard surfaces, not just roofs. It does this through bulk and secondary filtration systems that require no moving parts, no chemicals and no energy.
