Iraqi Students trip to the Great Ocean Road

On the 12th July 2008, a day trip was organised for a group of Iraqi students, predominately studying Engineering, at Monash University.

Volunteer postgraduates from the Monash Asia Institute have been providing tutoring in English language to the Iraqi students, whereby a “buddy system” was established to match one Iraqi student with a local English speaking postgraduate to help them prepare for their upcoming IELTS exams.

With funding from the Faculty of Engineering, the postgraduates organised an outing to show the Iraqi students the stunning Victorian coastline of the Great Ocean Road.

The students and their families were able to experience our wonderful countryside, as well as some great Aussie hospitality, with a local church in Lorne opening its hall so the Iraqi students and their families could enjoy a lunch prepared by the postgraduate students.

A pleasant time was had by all, with comments such as “The Great Ocean Road is magnificent - this is the real Australia that we read about”.
