2008 Future summit leadership awards
Congratulations to James Friend, Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Dr Gareth Forde, Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer, in the Department of Chemical Engineering, who have each been awarded a highly prestigious 2008 Future Summit Leadership Award.
The Future Summit, which will take place on the 12th and 13th of May in Sydney, will be Australia’s premier platform for the discussion of strategic trends and directions where business, government, academic and community leaders will meet to drive a vision for the future.
The Future Summit Leadership Awards are provided to recognise a new generation of outstanding leaders for their achievements and for recipients to contribute to Australia's future through participation in the Summit. The awards program provides the opportunity for awardees to build active relationships with thought leaders from across Australia in a variety of fields.

Dr Gareth Forde came to Monash after previously working in the Cambridge Unit for Bioscience Engineering (CUBE, Cambridge University) and has since established the Bio Engineering Laboratory (BEL). Gareth’s research interests are wide, encompassing greenhouse gas capture, renewable fuels and improving vaccines. One of his projects is to create a particle that can deliver a DNA prime-and-protein-boost vaccine via nasal inhalation. This technology could be of huge benefit to immunize large numbers of people in areas where there is less access to medical clinics, or in the case of a pandemic. Another project looks at how CO2 can be converted into transport fuel thereby reducing green house gas emissions and offering an alternative to fossil fuels. |

After arriving from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2004, Associate Professor James Friend established the MicroNano Research Laboratory (MNRL), a new, world-recognised research group investigating application of phenomena on the micro and nano-scales in the medical, industrial and biological industries. James’ research includes implantable microdevices for detection of the metastasis of cancer, portable aerosol drug delivery devices for treatment of chemotherapy-induced fatigue, the treatment of cardiorenal syndrome using a revolutionary design in renal stents, and swimming microrobots the width of three human hairs for non-invasive neurosurgery.
James and Gareth will be presented with the awards by The Hon Kevin Rudd MP Prime Minister of Australia on the 11th of May, prior to the commencement of the Future Summit in Sydney. |
