Education

Teaching and learning is the core business of the Department. The Department offers 8 undergraduate courses including double degrees and 2 postgraduate courses with current enrolments of about 700 undergraduate, 150 postgraduate course work, and 120 research students. The department also offers a 2+2 undergraduate program together with Tongji University and Central South University in China. The undergraduate courses are primarily delivered on campus and postgraduate courses primarily on distance education mode by 23 full time academic staff, 14 research fellows, 25 general staff and several part time and visiting lecturers.

Major part of teaching and learning activities are focused on student-centred learning, with emphasis on problem based learning approach where students learn from group tasks working in team environment. The learning is supported by well equipped laboratory facilities. Undergraduate students also undertake vacation work in industry to practice their skills and knowledge learnt during the course for a total of 12 weeks.
